BOSTON, MA – On the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund will host the state’s official Annual Commemoration to pay tribute to the victims who perished on that tragic day, especially those with ties to Massachusetts.

The annual commemoration services begin at 8:30 a.m. on the Massachusetts State House Front Steps at the Ashburton Park entrance. The ceremonies will start with a moment of silence and the reading of the names of the 206 victims of the attacks who were Massachusetts residents or had ties to Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey will preside over the reading of the names, with other readers include Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Massachusetts General Inspector Jeffrey Shapiro, and select members of Massachusetts families who lost their loved ones on that heartbreaking day.

The Name Reading ceremony will be followed by a formal commemoration held in the Massachusetts House of Representatives Chambers. This event will be presided over by Speaker Pro Tempore of the Massachusetts House of Representatives Kate Hogan and feature speeches by Keynote Speaker Deborah Rivlin, the Director of Education and Training at The Children’s Room Center for Grieving Children and Teenagers; Teresa Mathai of the Massachusetts 9/11 Fund’s Family Advisory Council; and a video tribute titled “Our Community of Care.”

The House ceremonies will also include the presentation of the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery by Lt. Gov. Driscoll.

Following the commemoration, Mayor Wu will preside over a wreath-laying ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. at the Massachusetts 9/11 Garden of Remembrance in the Boston Public Garden.

Commemorative ceremonies at the Statehouse are by invitation only. However, the media is welcome and encouraged to attend all portions of the commemoration, with interviews arranged at request by contacting Zoe Leven at zleven@fmproductions.com or 914-505-0923.
